PURPOSE AND NEED

The Calaveras County Department of Public Works, in collaboration with Caltrans and the Calaveras Council of Governments (CCOG), is undertaking the State Route 4 (SR4) Wagon Trail Project between Angels Camp and Copperopolis in order to improve safety and access to SR 4 as well as provide a reliable east-west evacuation route. The Wagon Trail Project aims to reduce accidents and improve traffic operations.

Project Phases

The Wagon Trail Project will be completed in two phases, as described below.

PHASE 1

Phase I begins at Bonanza Mine Way and continues to Appaloosa Road for a total of 3.2 miles and is currently under construction. This phase of construction is expected to finish in 2024.

PHASE 2

Phase II includes work from Appaloosa for approximately 3 miles eastward toward Angels Camp. This phase commenced in 2022 following the procurement of a design contract. The design and acquisition of right-of-way for this phase are expected to conclude by Summer 2026, after which construction will commence.
